Two closures collide: New Year’s Day on 1 January and Good Friday on 26 March.
24 hours apart: both patterns work 18 hours a week and start with the same confirmed allowance. The difference appears only when the contract includes bank holidays and requires leave for closures on normal workdays.
Questions this comparison can answer
No. GOV.UK says an employer does not have to provide paid leave on bank or public holidays. Your contract may make them part of your annual allowance, add them separately, or treat them as normal working days.
Yes. GOV.UK says an employer can include bank holidays within statutory annual leave. This calculator compares that scenario with no deduction; it does not decide which policy your contract uses.
For Great Britain, Acas says an employer cannot make a worker use holiday entitlement for a bank holiday that falls on a day they do not usually work. The collision list therefore counts only the normal workdays you select. Northern Ireland users should check the linked nidirect guidance and their contract.
Part-time and compressed-hours days can be different lengths. Hours preserve the exact cost of each closure and avoid silently rounding down a fractional entitlement or unequal shift.
Do not use the remaining-balance result. This version covers only a leave year from 1 January through 31 December 2027. A different 12-month window can contain a different set of bank holidays; ask your employer for the applicable dates and confirmed allowance.
